Virtue of the Week
Purposefulness – Whakatara-nga
Purposefulness is having a clear focus. Instead of being fuzzy or unsure what you’re doing or why you are doing it. When you have a goal you are working toward, you are acting on purpose. You concentrate your mind and your efforts so that you can keep your goal before you and something good will happen as a result. With God’s help, when you are purposeful, you can achieve just about anything.
We practice whakatara-nga when we:
- have a vision of what we want to accomplish
- concentrate our efforts on the goal
- keep from being distracted
- do things one at time and finish what we start
- get back on purpose if we are distracted
- persevere until we get results
Reflection of the week
The focus of Sunday’s readings is the mission of the church. In the first reading, the
apostles are persecuted for preaching about Jesus and they respond by preaching even to their prosecutors.
The Gospel tells us that at the word of Jesus the disciples caught so many fish they could hardly bring them in. All this is in the context of the church (the boat). We see in this reading references to the Eucharist: the bread which they shared and the mission to Peter to “feed my sheep.”

Come along to celebrate the Year of Mercy with a walk around the Tawa Loop track at the Manawatu Gorge. The walk, held previously for the Year of Faith, was a great success and a lot of fun. It is also a wonderful opportunity to honor Saint Joseph. Gather at the carpark on the Ashhurst side of the gorge at 10.30a.m. on Saturday 19th May. From there we will walk the Tawa Loop Track and stop halfway for a picnic lunch before viewing the Great Slip Lookout. Then we complete the Loop and finish about 2p.m. back at the carpark. Everyone is welcome. Please bring sensible shoes and your picnic. Any queries please contact Fr Marcus Francis ph 3585614 or 02102283349 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
