Virtue of the Week
Courtesy – Whakaaro-atawhai
Courtesy is being polite and having good manners. It is gracious way of speaking and acting which gives others a feeling of being valued and respected. It is greeting others with respect.
We practice courtesy when we:
- show others that we value and respect them
- remember to treat our elders, parents, teachers and children politely
- think how our actions affect others
- eat, speak and more graciously
- make requests instead of demands
- greet people with a smile
Reflection of the week
Our God is coming! Stay awake! Be ready!
This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. Culturally, we are accustomed to thinking of all of Advent as preparation for the birth of Jesus. But liturgically, we find a quite different emphasis. Only on the fourth Sunday of Advent, do we focus on the birth of Jesus. The first Sunday reminds us of the coming of Christ at the end of time. The second and third Sundays focus on the acceptance of Christ in our lives today, through baptism. It is this tension between the present and the future that gives meaning to the fourth Sunday, and , indeed to our celebration of the historical birth at Christmas.
